Hi Baby!, Inc. is the leading provider of high quality Prenatal and Family Health Case Management Services on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation working to reduce infant mortality of Indian People and ensure healthy pregnancies, healthy children and families by providing high quality individualized case management services. We integrate case management services to provide culturally appropriate case management services for pregnant and postpartum women and their children through four years within the health care system of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Our Case Managers bridge the communication and cultural gap between health care providers and American Indian women and advocate on behalf of women to enhance the delivery of culturally competent prenatal health care. We specialize in:
  • Providing case management and advocacy for women during prenatal health appointments during and immediately after pregnancy to encourage American Indian women to increase utilization of prenatal and postnatal health care appointments
  • Teaching community members and health care providers about American Indian culture and traditions surrounding prenatal care, pregnancy, delivery, and childcare as a way to provide a culturally appropriate reference to health and wellness for the pregnant women and their baby.
  • Promoting benefits of breastfeeding accompanied by one on one breastfeeding consulting, support and coaching. This includes educating professional care providers about the benefits of breastfeeding and encouraging them to join us in supporting a woman's choice to give her baby the best start in life.
  • Screening for risk-factors including depression, family violence, and dependence on tobacco, alcohol and other substance use/abuse supplemented with appropriate referrals for counseling and treatment as warranted.

Dynamic Healthcare
Previous research has found that American Indian women do not receive prenatal care because of lack of education about health care, marginalization from health care providers and services, and geographical distance from facilities (Herselman, 1994).

Three themes have been identified regarding barriers to prenatal care for American Indian women from the Oglala Sioux Tribe: 1) Communication barriers and a lack of trust of physicians who seemed too busy to respond to patients' questions, and modern medicine; 2) Long wait times for short appointments and inability to establish a trust based relationship with medical care providers when a different one is seen at each prenatal visit, leaving women feeling violated at each visit; and 3) Sociodemographic barriers including transportation issues that affect women's ability to get to, or keep prenatal appointments. Other serious problems were reported that superseded women's focus on their prenatal care including sexual and physical abuse, depression and even substance use.

Enhancing dynamic prenatal, postpartum and well child health care is an interactive process involving clients and their families, healthcare providers and 1, 2, 3… Hi Baby!, Inc. Case Managers. We are leading the health care management process by staying current in prenatal and child development healthcare and injury prevention techniques and providing services that follow nationally accepted measures and exceed client satisfaction levels.
